A lifetime of love and adventures, Dennis and Dianne Hedge

Dennis and Dianne have been married for 65 years, and to this day their beautiful love story continues. “We just couldn’t imagine being apart,” said Dennis.

They first met at a church group in Rose Bay back in 1957 and were married in 1960. They have three children, four grandsons, one granddaughter - and as Dennis says, “the most wonderful memories.”

For 40 years, they owned newsagencies across Australia, from Albury to Sydney. Over the years, they moved house an astonishing 24 times, due to the nature of their work. But amidst all the changes, Albury is where they lived the longest and where the children were educated.

“We worked hard but we were also very fortunate to have friends who could manage the newsagency while we were on holidays,” said Dianne.

Travelling was a passion they both shared, and something they encouraged in their children. “We went through Europe and England quite a few times. Dennis’ father was English and there were a lot of relatives there,” said Dianne.

“We’ve also travelled to America, Canada and Alaska. And local places like Fiji and New Zealand,“ added Dennis. Canada was a favourite destination, particularly a trip in 1988 when Dennis’s 84-year-old mother accompanied them on an unforgettable journey through Canada and up into Alaska.

Another standout experience was flying on the Concorde supersonic aeroplane from Miami to Washington, before continuing on to London - an exhilarating experience Dianne describes as incredible.

Russia, which Dennis described as an education, was also marvelous and unique. “We were sitting down at a table having lunch when they served an empty table next to us. The people never showed but they had to serve them first,” they recalled, as something they found very strange.

Other highlights included a helicopter ride over a very red and beautiful Ayers Rock (now Uluru) at sunset. And a helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon. “I remember it dropping down very low into the canyon. I thought the whole area was just amazing,” Dianne said.

Closer to home they recalled a time camping with friends on the beach in Narooma, back in the days when it was very primitive. They laughed while retelling the story of their friend's wife asking where the bathrooms were, only to have her husband hand her a spade!

Through all their journeys, Dennis and Dianne remain grateful - not just for the places they’ve visited, but mostly grateful for each other - for their lifetime of love, laughter, and adventures.
